Republic Day falls on January 26th every year.

India's Republic Day Republic Day is one of India's three national holidays and commemorates the enactment of the Constitution of India, which occurred on January 26, 1950. India gained independence from Britain on August 15, 1947 (which is celebrated as a separate national holiday), but for the first three years, the country remained largely governed by the colonial Government of India Act of 1935.

Shortly after independence, a Constituent Assembly, elected by the provincial assemblies, began drafting the constitution that would govern the newly independent nation. After more than two years, the Constitution of India was completed, laying a solid foundation for India's independent democratic government. January 26th was chosen as the date for its formal enactment to commemorate the Indian National Congress's 1930 proclamation of Purna Swaraj (complete self-rule), which was considered the first tangible step toward achieving independence from Britain.

With the 1950 constitution, the country was officially named the Republic of India, a "sovereign socialist secular democratic republic" that "secures to all its citizens justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity," as stated in the Preamble.

How is India's Republic Day celebrated?

The main event of the holiday is a massive parade held in New Delhi, the nation's capital, featuring cultural, historical, and military displays. Before the parade begins, the Prime Minister lays a wreath at the Amar Jawan Jyoti National War Memorial and observes a moment of silence in remembrance of fallen soldiers.

Across the country, smaller parades, cultural programs, public celebrations, and private parties are held. Since most businesses, schools, and government offices are closed, the celebrations officially conclude on January 29th with the Beating Retreat ceremony in New Delhi, where bands from the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force perform.
